Should Donald Trump be protected by civil lawsuits?

A federal appeals court has asked the Justice Department to weigh in on whether former President Donald Trump should be protected in civil lawsuits brought against him for his alleged role in the January 6 US Capitol attack.

The request is the latest in several high profile disputes where the Justice Department has had to consider how far to go to protect Trump.

Trump’s attorneys are arguing that the speech he gave before rioters breached the Capitol was protected presidential speech and thus immune to civil lawsuits.

Meanwhile, members of the January 6 committee are today defending their report, which calls on the DOJ to lay criminal charges against Trump.
