Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in U.S. Open

Players from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to compete in this year’s U.S. Open under a neutral flag

The move comes after the ATP and WTA stripped Wimbledon of ranking points after the tournament banned athletes from the two nations.

Both parties have condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is being supported by Belarus.

They banned the countries from international team competitions and have issued directives that players from those nations compete under a neutral flag in their other competitions.

But Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky is condemning the U.S. Open’s decision.

The 36-year-old gave up professional tennis earlier this year and has joined Ukraine’s reserve forces in Kyiv.
