Russia bans British journalists and defence figures

Russia has barred a number of top UK journalists and defence figures as Moscow’s latest round of sanctions come into force

29 employees from Sky TV, the BBC, the Guardian, Channel Four and ITV have all been targeted.

The BBC says it will continue to report independently and fairly despite these new measures.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry believes the British journalists on the list have engaged in deliberate spreading of false and one-sided information.

It says this is particularly true when it comes to recent events “in Ukraine and Donbas” and the reporting is leading to increasing Russophobia in Britain.

Moscow has also banned a number of elected British MPs, and has announced that the list will only continue to expand.

High profile media personalities on the list include Sky News chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay, who was wounded in a Russian ambush while reporting outside Kyiv.

The Times’ editor John Witherow, Chris Evans from the Telegraph and Katharine Viner have also been barred.

Internally, Russia has also closed down independent media outlets and criminalised reporting of so-called “false information” about the war in Ukraine.
