Residents across Myanmar are defying a military curfew in a desperate search for oxygen, as COVID waves crash over the country

The nation recorded over 7,000 new cases on Wednesday, as millions of residents in Yangon and Mandalay are ordered to stay at home.

It follows a military coup in February, leading to the collapse of local hospitals and the nation’s vaccination drive.

The military controls the nation’s health ministry

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says he has “deep concerns” over the military power in Myanmar and has called on Asian nations to take action and restore democracy in the country.

Infections are also seeping across Myanmar’s porous borders – last week a cluster in the border city of Ruili helped push China’s daily caseload to its highest in six months.
