Northern Territory team proposal highlights football’s deep roots, local talent pathways, and plans for an iconic Darwin stadium

In Short:
– The Northern Territory has deep football connections and the highest participation rates in Australia.
– A proposed multi-purpose stadium in Darwin aims to enhance local sports and culture while driving economic growth.

Football is more than a sport in the Northern Territory.

It is a way of life connecting communities from Darwin to Alice Springs and beyond. Sean Bowden, Senior Partner at Bowden McCormack Lawyers and Advisers, joins Footynomics host Tim Harcourt to explain why the NT has the highest football participation rates in Australia and why now could be the perfect time for a Territory AFL team.

With nearly 4o% of players being women and girls, the push for a local AFL side is about creating opportunities for future generations.

Bowden says a Territory team would allow talented young athletes to stay close to home instead of relocating interstate, while also helping build a stronger and more inclusive football culture across the region.

The conversation also explores the proposed Darwin CBD stadium project, designed as a multi purpose sporting and cultural hub that could transform the local economy.

Positioned close to Southeast Asia and India, the development could attract international events, tourism and investment while celebrating Aboriginal culture through collaboration with the Larrakia people.
