Online revenue from Black Widow brings Disney $125M… and counting

Walt Disney has so far taken in $125 million in revenue for its latest Marvel film, Black Widow

This comes as the lead actress in the movie, Scarlett Johansson takes the company to court because Walt Disney premiered the film simultaneously on its streaming platform and in cinemas.

Johannson’s payment for the film was largely reliant on the movie’s profits at the box office and she says Disney has cheated her out of proper compensation.

The actress believes that having the film stream online has meant the box office sales have been significantly lower.

Disney’s lawyers have disputed the claim, saying that Johansson has already been paid $20 million for her work… and says they offered to include online revenue in the bonuses calculations despite not being obliged to do so.

The case is being watched closely by Hollywood heavyweights as movie studio increasingly chose to release films on streaming services and not at the box office.
