North Korea has fired a short-range missile towards the sea off its east coast.

The test happened as North Korea’s ambassador says no-one could deny Pyongyang’s right to self-defence and to test weapons at the UN

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of staff provided no further details, but Japan’s defence ministry speculates the launch was a ballistic missile.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-In expressed the need for a peace treaty between the two countries to officially mark the end to the Korean War.

North Korea has also expressed willingness to engage in talks with the South.

The U-S military said in a statement that it was aware of the missile launch but that it posed no immediate threat to US personnel or its allies.
