If you work for Uber of Lyft, you’ll be treated differently under new rules

The U.S. Labor Department wants all workers to be classified as employees rather than independent contractors.

It’s a big shift for the millions of workers who are involved in the gig economy across the country.

Many of these workers operate in food delivery and transport.

Secretary Marty Walsh says the changes are part of a push to stop companies from malpractice.

At the news, some of the world’s largest gig economy companies fell on the U-S markets.

Shares in Uber and Lyft fell by more than 10 per cent.
