The Biden Administration has announced a new coordinator for Tibetan issues
The office will “promote substantive dialogue” between China and the Dalai Lama.
It seeks to protect the human rights and freedoms of the Tibetan people.
Uzra Zeya will serve as the new co-ordinator while staying in her current position as under-secretary for civilian security, democracy and human rights.
The appointment comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing over the treatment of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region.
Zeya says she will also support efforts to preserve historical, cultural and religious heritage.
