Moscow has locked down after facing record deaths and infections from Covid-19.

Shops, restaurants and schools have shut with only pharmacies and supermarkets remaining open.

Workers across the city will have 9 days off, in an effort to repress infections.

In the past day there have been 1,159 deaths from covid and 40,096 new infections across Russia in the past day.

This will mark the first major lockdown since June 2020.

The country’s overall covid death toll officially sits at more than 230,000 with the actual number predicted to be higher than the released government figures.

Vaccination within Russia remains low, with only 32.8% of people being vaccinated, one of the lowest numbers in Europe.
