Migrant surge continues

Footage showed hundreds of migrants swimming from Morocco or breaking through land barriers to enter Ceuta.

Local authorities reported the discovery of nine bodies on Thursday, raising the total number of migrant deaths to 60 in recent months.

In response, the Spanish government dispatched 200 police officers and 60 military personnel from the mainland to bolster local forces.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska plan to visit Ceuta for discussions with local security and authorities.

A Guardia Civil spokesperson confirmed that migrants were entering the enclave predominantly via the sea, stressing that police were unprepared for the scale of the influx.

Many businesses in Ceuta have closed their doors, with local shop owners expressing safety concerns.

Spain’s Socialist government is facing criticism for its pro-migrant policies, which many believe have encouraged such large arrivals.

In a statement, the opposition People’s Party leader described the situation in Ceuta as a national security crisis.

The mayor of Ceuta has called for a state of emergency due to the ongoing situation.

Italy has suggested reinstating border controls with Spain, citing concerns over migration policy effectiveness.

Recent court rulings prevent the summary return of migrants intercepted at sea, which some officials believe has facilitated the current surge.

The Interior Ministry is working with Morocco to manage and prevent illegal entries into Ceuta.

Migrants crossing into the enclave consist primarily of individuals from Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa, including families.
