Meta investment increases

Meta plans to add over 5,000 megawatts of clean power to the grid and is working with nonprofits to provide fresh water to the community.

The company highlighted its commitment to El Paso in a blog post, expressing pride in its local presence since breaking ground last year.

The 1.2-million-square-foot data center construction commenced in October, with Meta’s vice president, Gary Demasi, announcing the investment increase at a Borderplex Alliance summit.

Meta aims to enhance its AI infrastructure to meet high demand for computing resources following its earnings report indicating capital expenditures could reach $135 billion this year.

Unlike competitors such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, Meta lacks a cloud infrastructure business, leading to increased scrutiny from investors as the stock has dropped 17% this year.

The company is also implementing cost-cutting measures in various sectors, including confirming hundreds of layoffs across Facebook, global operations, and its virtual reality division.

Job creation expected

These layoffs come alongside Meta’s ongoing investment in AI, underscoring the challenges faced as the company navigates its growth strategy amid financial pressures.

The upcoming data center signifies Meta’s long-term commitment to technological advancement and local economic growth, even as it adjusts its workforce.
