27-year-old English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has won the 122nd U.S. Open in a thrilling battle

Matt Fitzpatrick has clinched his first major championship victory and secured a $3.15 million dollar paycheck.

The 27-year-old slipped passed World No.1 Scottie Scheffler to get his hands on the winning trophy.

“What. A. Day. From being a little kid this is a moment I could only dream of. To achieve one of my career goals yesterday was truly incredible. Words really can’t describe the feeling of winning a major, it’s 1000x better than I ever thought it would be.”

The World no.18 is the second player to win both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open at the same venue.

The challenging par-70 course didn’t make the victory easy for Fitzpatrick but his performance on the first three rounds secured his lead.

There were plenty of tears for the Fitzpatrick family, who were there to share the monumental moment.

To make it even more special, it was also Father’s Day, with Fitzpatrick sharing the special moment with his dad.
