U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and ally of Donald Trump, has died at 71.His office confirmed that Graham passed away following a brief and sudden illness, reportedly a heart attack.

Senator Tim Scott stated on CBS News that it appears Graham suffered a heart attack.

His passing will not change the dynamics of the Senate, as South Carolina remains predominantly Republican.

Trump noted Graham’s death removes a crucial Senate vote as he navigates a divided Congress.

Trump referred to Graham as “great” and “unique” during interviews following the announcement of his death.

Mitch McConnell, another senior Republican, is currently hospitalised, adding uncertainty to party leadership.

Graham had been in touch with Trump just before his death after a recent trip to Ukraine.

Flags will be flown at half-mast in Graham’s honour.

Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster can appoint a temporary replacement for Graham.

The South Carolina GOP will also conduct an expedited primary for a nominee for the upcoming midterm election.

Graham’s legacy remembered

Graham was a staunch supporter of Ukraine, Israel and opposed Iran’s influence.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed sadness over Graham’s passing, praising his commitment to democracy.

Graham had visited Ukraine ten times since the onset of Russia’s invasion.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged losing a great supporter and a close friend.

Michael McCaul emphasised that passing Graham’s bills, including sanctions on Russia, would honour his memory.

Once a critic of Trump, Graham evolved into a loyal supporter throughout his presidency.

His influence in the Senate was marked by significant judicial appointments during his tenure as Judiciary Committee chair.

Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002 and previously served in the House of Representatives.

He never married and lived in Seneca, South Carolina.
