Labor faces severe electoral decline in Victoria, with significant byelection swings benefiting Liberals and Greens losing in Prahran.

In Short

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan faces challenges after Labor’s support declines significantly in the Werribee byelection, losing ground to independent candidates. Polling reveals unpopularity for both former Premier Dan Andrews and current leaders, indicating a broader shift in voter sentiment in Victoria.

If this swing were applied federally, Labor could lose approximately 11 seats in Victoria.

These results illustrate a troubling decline in Labor’s support in what has traditionally been their stronghold.

In Werribee, Labor’s primary vote plummeted by 17 per cent, with many voters opting for the 10 independent candidates instead of the Liberal candidate, Steve Murphy.

Although the Liberals may regret that more votes did not directly shift to them, they are encouraged by any increase in support, particularly given their prior challenges.

Previously, Werribee was considered a safe Labor seat, similar to federal areas like Lalor and Gorton.

Pollsters indicate Labor’s declining appeal in Victoria is tied to the unpopularity of former Premier Dan Andrews and current issues surrounding Albanese’s leadership.
