The Biden administration will reverse a Trump-era policy and deploy US troops to Somalia

The U.S. will send up to 500 soldiers on full-time deployment as part of a bid to train the country’s army to combat militants.

Decided by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin the actions will better address threats from al-Shabab.

US President Joe Biden signed the order which deploys hundreds of US troops to Somalia.

US troops will be repositioned from elsewhere in Africa to train and provide other support to Somali forces and their fight against al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab is considered one of Africa’s deadliest and most powerful militant groups.

The act is a reminder that the U.S. is engaged in the long fight against Islamic extremists around the world.
