Florida Governor Ron DeSantis takes back control of Walt Disney World’s self-governing district

It’s a game of DeSantis vs Disney.

The governor of Florida has officially signed a bill which gives him control of Walt Disney World’s self-governing district.

The move is a direct retaliation to Disney’s opposition to a state law restricting sexual orientation and gender identity discussions in schools.

The bill authorises Republican DeSantis to appoint a five-member board to oversee the government services the company provides across the sprawling theme park.

State Republicans targeted Disney after the company publicly clashed with DeSantis, who is widely considered to be running for president in 2024.

In opposition to the so-called “Don’t Say Gay Bill”, Disney’s then CEO Bob Chapek, publicly voiced disappointment with the law, even calling Florida’s conservative governor to express concern about the legislation.

But DeSantis moved quickly to penalise the company, directing lawmakers in the GOP-dominated legislature to dissolve Disney’s self-governing district.

The GOP has slammed the company for coming out against the education law, calling it a purveyor of “woke” ideology.

Announcing the changes, DeSantis said “there’s a new sheriff in town”. #trending #featured
