United Nations researchers reveal the IPCC climate report that gives the world a stark warning about climate change

The report is conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It is the first global assessment on the science of global heating since 2013. This is the strongest statement on the science of climate change.

What is the IPCC?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a UN body set up in 1988, and assesses the science around climate change. It provides Governments with the scientific information they can use to develop policies on global heating.

This report is a summary, that details the science of climate change and its predictions for the decade ahead. It is made up of hundreds of the world’s foremost climate scientists.

After two weeks of virtual conversations between scientists and Government representatives. This is the first part of three assessments to be released on climate change. The report details all of the significant changes to the planet in the next decade.

Key points from IPCC report

The key takeaways from the report are the rising temperatures, caused by humanity. The temperature at the surface has warmed 0.24 degrees since 2013.

Earth will hit 1.5°C in the next 20 years. Human influence on climate is “unequivocal”. Abrupt tipping points can’t be ruled out.  Net-zero could stabilise warming below 1.5°C by 2100.

Humanity, through its actions, or lack of, has “unequivocally” overheated the planet. There is a strong emphasis on world leaders to make immediate changes now.

“This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet. If we combine forces now, we can avert climate catastrophe. But, as the report makes clear, there is no time for delay and no room for excuses.”

– UN secretary general

The report has now laid out all of the scientific evidence that suggests climate change is an emergency and should be treated like it. Human fingerprints can be traced throughout the climate system.

The impacts are worse than previously predicted and will grow costlier if immediate action is not taken. Governments and businesses must halve pollution between 2020 and 2030 to reach full carbonisation by mid-century.

There is a strong emphasis on what humanity does in this decade that will determine the future.

“Every decision, every investment, every target, needs to have the climate at its core.”

Helen Clarkson, the CEO of the Climate Group

“Methane and Nitrous Oxide, along with Carbon Dioxide are now higher than at any point in the last 800, 000 years. Yet, Government spending plans for the recovery from Covid-19 are expected to drive carbon emissions to record levels.”

Proof of climate change

The fires, floods and extreme weather events that have and are ravaging the world are an example of climate change. Currently, Greece is seeing its highest temperatures in thirty years. And, Turkey and the United States are also experiencing unprecedented heat waves.

These are an insight into what is to come according to the landmark IPCC report.

However, this stark warning comes less than three months before vital United Nations talks in Glasgow, which will determine the future course of our planet.

COP26 Glasgow

The IPCC report will now influence Policymakers’ decisions in the lead-up to the COP26 climate meeting in Glasgow. COP26 is a climate summit with world leaders and the United Kindom is hosting this year.
