The group stole 80gb of user data in the February phishing attack, highlighting user dissatisfaction with recent policy changes on the platform

A ransomware group is claiming responsibility for a hack on Reddit’s systems earlier this year — and demanding not just money but policy changes.

The group known as BlackCat says it was behind the February phishing attack on Reddit.

It claims to have stolen 80 gigabytes of data from Reddit and will release it, unless Reddit rolls back its planned changes to its API – application programming interface – policy.

It’s also demanding US$4.5 million in ransom.

Andrew Rossow, attorney and CEO of AR Media said it was a strange case of a possible sophisticated black hat exploitation.

“The Reddit culture has been that everybody should have some kind of democratised access to everything going around in our world,” he said, “and for this type of policy that says we’re going to restrict this type of access… that’s a huge change.”
