Guinea’s government has reportedly been overthrown in a suspected military coup after a military officer broadcasted a statement

In the statement, the official says “we will no longer entrust politics to a man, we will entrust it to the people, we come only for that, it is the duty of a soldier to save the country”.

It’s believed the country’s President Alpa Conde has been arrested and removed from power, with the constitution, the entire government and all other institutions suspended.

Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean

The country’s land and sea borders have also reportedly been shut, with gunfire erupting in the capital of Conarky

Heavily armed soldiers are currently present around all government buildings, and the British embassy to Guinea has warned that there was “sustained gunfire in several locations” and have been asking people to remain vigilant.

The United Nations Secretary General has also called for the president’s release.
