An Australian senator has sent herself to the nation’s privileges committee over an undisclosed relationship

Australian Greens Senator Lydia Thorpe will refer herself to parliament’s powerful privileges committee.

Ms Thorpe made the decision after an undisclosed relationship with a former member of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang became public.

The Australian Senator said she had not been open about the relationship because she was concerned about how it would be “twisted and used against” her.

The relationship ended several years ago. But the senator said she had only recently become aware of the Rebels’ “criminal associations”.

“I have decided to write to the president of the Senate today requesting a referral of myself to the Senate Committee of Privileges.”

Ms Thorpe said the Greens Party Room backed her decision, and is “more than willing to participate in any inquiry”.

The relationship with the former bikie boss Dean Martin took place as Ms Thorpe sat on the nation’s law enforcement committee.

Labor senator Helen Polley is the current chair of the law enforcement committee, who launched an internal investigation into any potential conflicts of interest last week.

The body has the power to recommend a senator be suspended or expelled from parliament entirely.

Helicopter carrying Iran’s President Raisi crashes

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister crashed on Sunday as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog.

The official said the lives of Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were “at risk following the helicopter crash”, which happened on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan in Iran’s northwest.

“We are still hopeful but information coming from the crash site is very concerning,” the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

State TV quoted an official as saying at least one passenger and one crew member had been in contact with rescuers. It also said the helicopter had been found, though Iran’s Red Crescent denied this report.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate power with a final say on foreign policy and Iran’s nuclear programme, sought to reassure Iranians, saying there would be no disruption to state affairs. #iran #trending
