The world’s biggest social media company is launching new AR specs

Facebook successfully launched its new smart glasses this week, taking the social media giant closer to its aim of offering “true augmented reality spectacles”.

The glasses, which were created in partnership with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica, allow those who wear them to listen to music, as well as take calls and capture photos and short videos and share them across Facebook’s services using a companion app.

The selection of glasses don’t come cheap, at a cost of around $300 USD

Facebook, owned by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg last year reported revenue of about US$86 billion – and makes most of its money from advertising.

Until recently though, the company has invested heavily in virtual and AR, developing hardware such as its Oculus VR headsets and working on wristband technologies to support AR glasses.
