Tourists turned away from Machu Picchu as Peru’s protestors target university

Peru is witnessing some of its worst protests in three decades.

It’s now so bad, authorities have been forced to suspend tourist entry to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail.

Those who have a ticket from January 21 up to one month after the protests end can claim a refund.

On Saturday, police stormed the National University of San Marcos to remove demonstrators.

Authorities say their presence was requested by the university who said individuals “had used violence” against staff and taken control of the campus.

More than 100 protesters were arrested.

Residents are demanding new elections, the resignation of their current leader, the release of his predecessor from prison AND a change to the constitution.

They also want better living conditions which have declined significantly over the past two decades since democratic rule was restored in the country. #trending #featured
