The G20 leaders summit has shown restraint regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, coinciding with a critical phase in the ongoing war.
The summit, held in Brazil, concluded with a final declaration that allowed Russia, China, and India to continue polluting beyond 2050, and did not address Israel’s right to defend itself or the situation of over 100 hostages.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese participated in the summit, which was the first since the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023.
The declaration referenced the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for expanded humanitarian assistance but did not identify Iran or the roles of Hezbollah and Hamas in the conflicts.
The meeting signaled protection for civilians and reiterated a commitment to a two-state solution for lasting peace, while condemning terrorism broadly without specifics.
As the summit concluded, Putin, currently under an international arrest warrant, missed the event but intensified his nuclear threats following Ukraine’s use of US-supplied missiles.
