France is celebrating the beginning of its 6-month term as President of the Council of the European Union

The city lit up its landmarks in spectacular fashion… including the Eiffel Tower and The Arc De Triomphe.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also visited Paris to mark the occasion… meeting with the President of the Republic, the French Government and members of the French Senate and the National Assembly.

The leaders discussed key joint priorities for the months ahead… with President von der Leyen saying she is delighted that a country with the political weight and experience of France is taking on the Council Presidency at this delicate time.

The Council’s agenda for the next six months will focus on climate and digital transition… whilst also stepping up security and defence efforts.
