Param Bir Singh is the city’s former police chief and arrived at a local police station without warning on Thursday.

The reappearance follows the region’s Supreme Court ordering that SING would be protected from arrest if he cooperated with the ongoing investigation.

The man was last seen in May and it remains unclear exactly where he has been hiding for these past several months.

Lawyers for the accused say Singh has “very much been in India” but was hiding in fear of “actions being taken by the state”.

The former police chief is facing charges of extortion for several cases filed by realtors, hoteliers and bookies in Mumbai.
