Florida leans further to the right as state’s legislatures seek to introduce new restrictions on abortion, gender, diversity and the press

Florida is leaning further to the right as the state’s lawmakers seek to introduce new abortion, gender, diversity and press restrictions.

The proposals also include a further relaxation of concealed weapons laws and the ability of courts to impose death sentences.

This comes five months after the state’s rightwing Republican governor Ron DeSantis secured a second term by a wide margin.

His party also established a convincing majority in the state legislature.

DeSantis is rumoured to be positioning himself as a likely 2024 presidential candidate and a direct challenger to Donald Trump.

Last week, Republican lawmakers moved to expand the state’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law.

The legislation proposes limiting the use of gender pronouns within parts of the public school system.
