Florida has passed a nation-first bill that will fine tech companies for removing politicians from their platforms.
Coming into effect on July 1, the new regulations state that social media platforms may only suspend user accounts for up to two weeks – or face fines of over $200,000 per day.
Florida’s Governor has become increasingly vocal about big tech companies and their moves to “silence” certain conservative voices.
It follows former US President Donald Trump having his Facebook ban upheld by the tech company’s oversight board a few weeks ago.
It’s expected that the new laws will face legal challenges in the coming months, with lobbying group NetChoic already voicing strong opposition.
