DOJ seeks 6-months in jail and $200K fine for Steve Bannon

Federal prosecutors made the recommendations for the former White House advisor for contempt of Congress

On Monday, U.S. federal prosecutors recommended that former President Donald Trump’s White House advisor Steve Bannon receive a six-month jail sentence and a $200,000 fine.

The recommendation comes after Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena from the congressional probe of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Addressing the media, Bannon said, “We may have lost the battle here today—but, we’re not going to lose this war.”

Citing Trump’s claims of executive privilege, Bannon’s lawyers justified their client’s refusal to comply with the subpoena saying that a president can prevent the release of certain White House documents or communications.

However, prosecutors rejected that argument in this case.

The recommendation comes on the heels of the U.S. House select committee unanimously voting to subpoena Trump on Thursday.

The committee is made up of seven Democrats and two anti-Trump Republicans who have been investigating for 16-months.

Previously, Trump has refused to voluntarily cooperate with the panel, calling it a partisan witch hunt.

Bannon is set to be sentenced on Friday which marks one year since the House voted to hold him in contempt of Congress.

Washington D.C. has been under pressure to ban the popular Chinese-owned social media app TikTok.

TikTok users could soon find that the popular social media service is either under new ownership or could be outright banned in the U.S.

Calls are growing louder from many lawmakers and national security hawks to ban TikTok, over fears the app could censure content, influence users, and give Americans’ personal data to Beijing.

But the Chinese tech company, ByteDance—which owns TikTok— denies the allegations.
