COP26 – UN urges world to strengthen carbon-cutting

Countries are being urged to immediately strengthen their carbon-cutting targets in the draft agreement at the COP-26 Glasgow climate event

The document also says vulnerable nations need more help to cope with the impacts of global warming.

Although some critics say the draft agreement doesn’t go far enough, others have applauded the focus on the 1.5-degree target.

The document was published by the UK COP-26 presidency and will now undergo an intense negotiation process with all participating nations.

At its core, the draft says countries need to commit to long-term strategies by 2022 to reach net-zero.

COP-26 president, Alok Sharma says he expects “near-final texts” to be published overnight… saying this agreement will “set the future for our children and grandchildren”.

Scientists believe it will require global emissions to be cut by 45% by 2030 and to zero overall by mid-century to keep global warming below the 1.5-degree target.

The document urges countries to “revisit and strengthen” targets for cutting emissions by 20-30 in their national plans to align them with the Paris Agreement.
