Her name was supposed to be Orpah, from the Bible. But that was too hard to pronounce, so she became Oprah.

She had a difficult childhood, facing poverty and abuse.

Despite these horrific challenges, she went on to become one of the most successful and influential entertainers in the world.

Winfrey became Nashville’s first African American female co-anchor of the evening news. From there, it was off to Baltimore.

In 1985, Oprah appeared in Stephen Spielberg’s The Colour Purple, which is about a young African-American woman, is raped by her father.

By 1985, the Oprah Winfrey Show was expanded to one hour and Oprah was on her way to becoming the queen of daytime television.
