China is staring down the barrel of a population crisis.

The National Bureau of Statistics estimates the population dipped to 1.412 billion last year, down from 1.413 billion 12 months prior.

So what are the key factors driving this decrease?

China is grappling with an ageing society, while also struggling to boost its birth rate.

A big reason for this is more women choosing a careers and personal goals, over starting a family.

The Chinese government abolished its one-child policy in 2016 and scrapped childbirth limits in 2021.

But it wasn’t enough – and leaders are concerned.
