Basketball Australia rejects Lexi Rodgers’ application to join the national women’s competition

Basketball Australia has rejected a transgender athlete from joining the competition.

Lexi Rodgers’ application to join the women’s semi-professional basketball league has been denied.

In a statement, Basketball Australia says a panel convened by the governing body had determined that Rodgers is “ineligible to play.”

“As the governing body, we acknowledge we’re still on a path of education and understanding. Lexi will provide feedback and advice from her experiences,” it continued.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions from the basketball community.

Former NBA star Andrew Bogut took to Twitter to praise the decision, saying “women’s sports are for women”.

There are many who are disappointed by the decision, including Rodgers herself.

She says she participated fully and in good faith with the process and would keep pushing to play women’s basketball.
