Barbados has cut ties with the British Monarchy

The nation will replace Queen Elizabeth as its head of state, with her current representative, Governor-General Sandra Mason taking over.

It comes as Prince Charles delivers a speech focusing on continued ties between Barbados and the UK.

The Prince says it is “important to me that I should join you to re-affirm those things which do not change.”

Britain’s rule over the island-nation included more than 200 years of slavery.

The nation became independent in 1966.
