Banksy mural in Margate taken apart

Banksy’s latest mural in Britain’s Margate has been taken apart just hours after the artist confirmed it was genuine

Dubbed “Valentine’s Day Mascara”, the piece depicts a 1950s housewife, wearing yellow washing-up gloves and a blue apron, pushing her husband into a freezer.

The woman is also smiling despite having a swollen eye and a missing tooth – suggesting a theme of domestic violence.

But the freezer being used was a real freezer and deemed to be a safety hazard by the local district council.

The council has therefore removed the prop and says it will return “once it has been made safe”.

The council will be contacting the owner of the property where the artwork sits to discuss options to preserve the piece for the district.

Banksy confirmed the artwork is his own by posting a series of photos on Instagram, with the caption “Valentine’s Day mascara”.
