Austria imposes lockdown on people unvaccinated against COVID-19

More than 2 million residents must stay at home for at least 10 days

Austria‘s government has officially ordered more than 2 million residents who are unvaccinated against Covid-19 to stay-at-home.

This move comes as pressures builds on hospitals, with the health-care system struggling to cope with an influx in admissions.

Austria’s chancellor says his government is “not taking this step lightly” but believes “it is necessary”.

Unvaccinated residents will only be able to leave home for a small number of reasons, including work or buying food.

The unvaccinated were already barred from entering a number of venues including restaurants, hairdressers and cinemas.

Currently, around 65 percent of Austria’s population is vaccinated… one of the lowest rates in western Europe.

Austria’s 7-day infection rate is now more than 800 cases per 100-thousand people… which is one of the highest in Europe.

The measures will last for at least 10 days.
