Quantum battery breakthrough

Research led by CSIRO involved collaboration with RMIT University and the University of Melbourne, published in *Light: Science & Applications*.

The quantum battery relies on “collective effects,” allowing all storage units to charge together, significantly speeding up the charging process.

RMIT PhD candidate Daniel Tibben noted that larger quantum batteries charge faster, contrasting with current battery technology.

The prototype consists of a small multi-layered organic microcavity that charges wirelessly via laser, retaining energy for significantly longer than it takes to charge.

Dr. James Quach, CSIRO’s quantum science leader, spearheaded prototype engineering, improving upon a previous version that lacked discharge capability.

Current capacities are limited, with charge duration lasting only nanoseconds, inadequate for typical devices.

Quantum batteries might be beneficial for quantum computing, potentially enhancing qubit power sources.

A CSIRO study indicated that quantum batteries may increase the qubit count while minimizing heat and wiring needs.

Future applications

Quach envisions a future where electric vehicles charge more rapidly than conventional petrol cars.
