At least one person is dead and more than 30 injured following a train crash in the Netherlands

At least one person is dead and more than 30 injured after a passenger train derailed in the western Netherlands.

Emergency services say the overnight crash happened when the train hit construction equipment.

There were earlier reports which said this incident followed a collision with a freight train.

Rescuers and medics are on the scene, providing care to those injured.

The crash happened at around 3:25AM local time on Tuesday.

Footage taken at the scene shows overturned carriages and a plume of smoke rising in the night sky.

Emergency services say those seriously injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, while 11 people are being treated in the houses of local residents.

Officials from the Dutch Safety Board have been dispatched to the crash scene as investigations begin. #trending #featured
