An American journalist, reporting in Myanmar has been detained and charged with terrorism

US journalist Danny Fenster who was detained in Myanmar after being arrested in May, has been charged with terrorism and sedition after he tried to leave the south-east Asian nation. He could face life in prison if convicted.

The nation’s terrorism law criminalises contacts with officially designated “terrorist” groups.

It covers “acts of persuasion, propaganda and recruitment of any person to participate in any terrorist group”.

Myanmar’s military seized power in February, where the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted.

It has repeatedly used lethal force against protesters but has been unable to quell popular resistance to its takeover.

More than 1,000 civilians are estimated to have been killed and there have been widespread arrests.
