A rugby World Cup-winning player has been arrested in Johannesburg

Fly-half Elton Jantjies was arrested for allegedly causing “malicious damage to property” on a flight from Dubai.

It is alleged the player damaged a light on board the aircraft. But his agent believes the incident has been “unnecessarily heightened”.

Local police confirmed the 31-year-old was released on a 1,000 South African Rand bail and is expected to appear at a magistrates’ court.

Jantjies has played 41 times for the Springboks and was part of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad.

He has been on holiday in Turkey with his family, who are still there, before flying home.
