– Israel conducted airstrikes against Hezbollah, with tensions remaining high despite a fragile ceasefire.
Tensions escalated when the U.S. destroyed two ships from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched surface-to-air missiles at U.S. aircraft, leading to American strikes on missile launchers near Bandar Abbas, according to a U.S. official.

Col. Tim Hawkins, spokesman for U.S. Central Command, stated that the U.S. continues to defend its forces while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.

Israel’s military conducted airstrikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon following statements from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that Israel remains at war with the group.

These strikes highlight the precarious situation in the Middle East as the U.S. aims to negotiate a long-term resolution to regional conflicts.

On May 15, the U.S. announced a 45-day extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s government.

However, the truce remains fragile, particularly because Hezbollah was excluded from ceasefire negotiations.

Netanyahu indicated that Israel is not easing its military pressure, stating in a video statement, “We are not taking our foot off the gas.”

The Israeli military reported hitting infrastructure sites near Tyre and intercepting a drone launched by Hezbollah.

Iran’s response

Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran’s parliamentary national security committee, warned that any attacks on Iranian forces would elicit a strong response.

This statement followed American strikes on targets in southern Iran, characterized as defensive by U.S. military officials.

Azizi said that Iranian forces would be prepared to thwart any hostile actions.

Despite the escalation, official Iranian comments remained largely subdued as negotiators traveled to Qatar to address unresolved issues in talks with the U.S.
