5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Iran

Published

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake has hit northwestern Iran, killing at least three people and injuring more than 900 in the region, near the border with Turkey

Hundreds are seeking shelter from freezing winter conditions in evacuation centres as more than 20 aftershocks rattled the region.

People were seen wrapped in blankets and huddling around fires in the snow-dusted region.

The earthquake caused major damage to residential buildings in 70 villages, destroying houses to dust.

Rescuers cleared the rubble to free those trapped in the area around 800 kilometres northwest of the capital.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society announced the search and rescue operations had finished, with no more survivors or bodies believed to be trapped.

Scenes from a local hospital shows the high number of patients as all the facility’s rooms are packed with the injured.

Trump claims Iran military neutralised as Strait Of Hormuz tensions surge

Trump claims Iran’s military largely neutralized; tensions rise with attacks threatening air travel and oil shipping.

President Trump says Iran’s military capability has been largely neutralised, including its navy and air force, as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies. Iranian attacks have threatened commercial air travel and oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of wider economic fallout.

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has faced two attacks, while Gulf states worked to intercept further Iranian strikes. Officials report six U.S. troops killed and more than 700 deaths inside Iran as the exchange of fire escalates.

With global markets watching closely, the region remains on edge as military and diplomatic tensions show no signs of easing.
