A zero-calorie sweetener, known as ‘erythritol’, has been linked to heart attack and stroke

A sugar additive has been linked to blood clotting, stroke, heart attack and even death.

It’s called erythritol, and U.S. researchers have found the risk is far from modest.

People with existing risk factors for heart disease, like diabetes may be twice as likely to experience a stroke.

The study finding erythritol appears to be causing blood platelets to clot more readily.

The clots can then break off and travel to the heart, causing dire consequences.

Artificial sweeteners are common replacements for table sugar, and are often recommended to people with diabetes or looking to manage their calorie intake.

Erythritol is about 70 per cent as sweet as sugar but its poorly metabolized by the body.
