U.S. trade representative Katherine Tai and China’s vice premier Liu He have had a “candid” first conversation.

The trade chiefs spoke Thursday morning with China’s ministry of commerce saying in a statement that the chat was “conducted with mutual respect”.

The conversation was an ongoing review of the US – China trade relationship while also raising concerns on both sides.

The phone call is one of the few top level meetings between the two sides since Biden took office.
