‘We have concern’: Twitter’s clash with India’s new laws

Twitter has raised alarms about freedom of speech in India following police visiting its offices and serving the social media giant with a legal notice.

Speaking to the BBC, the company says it is “concerned by recent events regarding employees in India and the potential threat to freedom of expression”.

It comes after Twitter labelled a tweet posted by a member of the country’s ruling party as “manipulated media”.

Authorities say Twitter is obligated to follow the law, as tensions between the Indian government and many media organisations continue to rise.

Twitter says “we, alongside many in civil society in India and around the world, have concerns with regards to the use of intimidation tactics by the police in response to enforcement of our global terms of service, as well as with core elements of the new IT rules.”
