Watch out for romance scams on Valentine’s Day

For the 300 million people who use dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, today is a popular day to get chatting, but watch out for red flags

The Australian Federal Police has issued its first Valentine’s Day warning.

This comes after an Australian woman mailed $50,000 in cash to help her ‘boyfriend’.

Federal police asked to see the couple’s online conversations, becoming clear she was being scammed, and she’s not alone.

The AFP has revealed there is a “growing trend” where people refuse to accept they are in a relationship with a fraudster.

This is common particularly among women who are tricked by fake profiles on dating apps.

Last year, more than $40 million was reported lost to romance scams.
