US faces unprecedented “voter suppression”

voter suppression

US President Joe Biden is under the heat as pressure mounts to pass election overhaul legislation.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says Republican efforts to stall sweeping election overhaul legislation is “voter suppression”.

Senators are gearing up to cast their vote on the proposed new laws. However, a lack of bipartisan support will likely stall further progress.

‘For the People Act’

Dubbed the “For the People Act”, it will require at least 10 Republican senators to join all 50 Democrats if it is to reach the 60-vote threshold and progress.

Democrats say the bill is an attempt to undo restrictive new voting laws in Republican-held states like Georgia.

Schumer says this initial vote is merely an attempt to begin negotiations that will shape the final bill. However, he believes Republicans won’t debate because “they’re afraid and they don’t want to talk about it”.
