US-China AI Summit ends without the breakthrough many expected

The latest meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may have eased some trade tensions, but artificial intelligence remains a major point of competition between the two powers.

Professor Tim Harcourt from UTS says the summit missed an opportunity for the US and China to establish greater cooperation on AI, with no significant progress made on regulation.

While the two sides reached some concessions on tariffs, the broader technology rivalry remains unresolved.

Trump has argued that US AI will ultimately outperform its competitors as Washington and Beijing race for technological leadership.

The lack of an AI agreement could also give Taiwan and US Indo-Pacific partners more room to navigate the growing competition between the two countries.
