In an effort to reduce climate change, the White House has released a new report that shows how the US could boost its solar capacity to meet 45 percent of total electricity usage

The study was commissioned by the Energy Department and says there are three possible scenarios, two of which would allow the US grid to be 95 percent de-carbonised by 20-35.

The final scenario is the most ambitious, saying the country could be completely de-carbonised by 2050.

In a way to meet these targets, the Energy Department is pushing for solar power to be used for 45 percent of electricity generation by 2050.

The US will need to produce double its current annual solar energy usage over the next four years and then double the output again between 2025 and 2030.

This new plan follows President Joe Biden touring areas of New York and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane ida.

The president used the visit as an opportunity to shine a light on climate change and the increasing number of extreme weather incidents that are “only going to get worse”.

Biden is focused on implementing a number of provisions in the coming months designed to reduce his country’s carbon footprint, some of which fall under the $3.5 trillion spending package.
