Ukrainian drones launched a significant attack on St. Petersburg early Saturday, with Russian officials labelling it “large-scale”. The city’s governor advised residents to stay indoors amid fears of internet disruptions.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov also warned of potential disruptions as regional officials reported that 141 drones were neutralised in the Leningrad region. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it intercepted a total of 376 drones, with no immediate casualties reported.
Kyiv’s ability to strike deep into Russia grows, challenging Putin’s narrative of a war unaffected by daily life. Earlier in the week, Ukraine had already damaged an oil terminal and assaulted the naval base at Kronstadt, coinciding with the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Putin acknowledged drone breaches in Russian defenses at the forum, pledging to enhance air defence systems. Reports suggested 9,418 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in May, marking a peak.
Zelensky reached out to Putin with a proposal for face-to-face talks, suggesting a ceasefire during negotiations in neutral territory. Putin dismissed the offer, stating he saw no purpose in meeting.
The ongoing cycle of strikes reflects a stalemate as both sides leverage long-range drone warfare. This persistent conflict marks five years, with no clear resolution in sight.
